Vice President Kamala Harris delivers the most crucial speech of her career as she accepts the Democratic nomination for president. This comes after the party encouraged President Joe Biden to step aside. Harris, who has long aspired to the presidency, faced setbacks in her 2020 campaign and vice-presidential term. However, since taking the lead, she has narrowed the gap against Donald Trump, energizing voters with her passionate speeches.
If elected, Harris will be the first Black, South Asian woman to become president. In her speech, she shares her personal story, highlighting her background as the daughter of a Jamaican father and an Indian mother. Her platform focuses on supporting the middle class by reducing costs for essentials like groceries, housing, and taxes, while also protecting personal freedoms, including abortion rights.
Harris directly criticized Trump, emphasizing the need for unity in America, according to campaign co-chair Cedric Richmond. During the convention’s first night, Kamala surprised attendees by stepping on stage to Beyonce’s “Freedom.”
Harris has raised a record-breaking $500 million in a month, closing the gap or leading in battleground state polls. However, strategists caution that enthusiasm alone won’t secure a victory. While public polls show Harris leading Trump 46.6% to 43.8%, internal polls suggest the race may be tighter.
Kamala had spent weeks refining her speech, working closely with her lead speechwriter. Despite Republican criticism of her focus on “price gouging,” Harris remains committed to addressing this issue. The speech also covered foreign policy and highlight the impact of abortion bans on women.
Harris also voiced support for Israel’s right to self-defense and the need to end suffering in Gaza, while emphasizing that she and President Biden were working toward a cease-fire.
