Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced his plan to resign as Liberal Party leader. He will remain prime minister until a new leader is chosen.
Speaking outside Rideau Cottage in Ottawa, Trudeau reflected on his nearly 10-year tenure. He praised Canadians for their resilience and determination. Trudeau highlighted achievements like supporting Ukraine, pandemic policies, and fighting climate change. He admitted regret over failing to reform Canada’s election process.
Trudeau’s resignation follows mounting challenges during his leadership. He faced tariff threats from Donald Trump, key resignations, and declining public support. Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland resigned last month, citing disagreements with Trudeau’s vision.
Canada’s parliament will remain suspended until March 24. Trudeau called for a fresh start, blaming a prolonged minority parliament for stalled progress.
Trudeau led the Liberal Party for 11 years and served as prime minister for nine. He rose to power in 2015 as a progressive voice. However, his popularity declined due to controversies like the blackface scandal and vaccine mandate backlash.
The Liberal Party faces a tough road ahead of the general election later this year. Polls show the opposition Conservative Party, led by Pierre Poilievre, holds a 20% lead.
Potential Liberal leaders include Chrystia Freeland and economic adviser Mark Carney. Trudeau’s decision aims to give the party a chance to rebuild under new leadership.
