Today, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) students took to the streets demanding justice for Denzel Omodi, an architectural student. The protests started in the early morning and saw hundreds of students rallying together. They demanded accountability and transparency from the university administration and local authorities.
The catalyst for these protests was the death of Denzel, a well-known student at JKUAT. Denzel’s sudden and suspicious demise has left the student body in shock and grief. Reports suggest that Denzel was last seen on 27th June after participating in the anti-finance bill 2024 protests. His body was discovered in a quarry on July 7 with his backpack and national ID. Autopsy results showed he died by drowning and he had bruises on his head and legs. The students believe there has been a lack of thorough investigation and communication from the authorities regarding the case.
Students’ Demands for Denzel’s death
The protesting students outlined several demands during their demonstrations. Firstly, they are calling for a comprehensive investigation into Denzel’s death to uncover the truth and bring those responsible to justice. They also demand regular updates on the progress of the investigation to ensure transparency. Secondly, they are urging the university administration to take proactive measures in ensuring the safety and security of all students on campus. This includes improving security infrastructure and increasing the presence of security personnel.
The protest march began at the university’s main gate, with students holding placards and chanting slogans. The atmosphere was charged with emotion as students expressed their frustration and anger. Many of the placards carried messages such as “Justice for Denzel,” “We Demand Answers,” and “Safety First.” The march proceeded to the local police station, where the students presented their grievances and demands to the authorities.
Response from Authorities about Denzel’s death
In response to the protests, the university administration released a statement expressing condolences to Denzel’s family and friends. The administration also assured the student body that they are cooperating fully with law enforcement agencies to ensure a thorough investigation. The local police also addressed the protesters, promising to prioritize the investigation and keep the public informed of any developments.
The protests have garnered significant attention and support from various quarters. Alumni of JKUAT and other universities, as well as members of the public, have shown solidarity with the protesting students. Social media platforms have been abuzz with hashtags like #JusticeForDenzel, amplifying the students’ call for justice and accountability.
Moving Forward
As the day progressed, students kept the protests peaceful and stayed determined to keep the momentum going until authorities met their demands. However, the arrival of the anti-riot unit around 5 PM turned the peaceful protests into chaos. The anti-riot unit used water cannons to disperse the students who had caused traffic congestion along Thika Road for almost four hours. The mix caught many students, including primary and secondary school pupils. The student leadership plans further engagements with the university administration and local authorities to ensure they address their concerns comprehensively.
The JKUAT student protests today underscore the urgent need for justice and improved safety measures on campus. The tragic loss of Denzel has not only brought the university community together but also highlighted the critical importance of transparency and accountability in handling such sensitive cases. As investigations continue, the students remain resolute in their quest for justice, hoping that their efforts will lead to meaningful change and a safer environment for all.
