Israel to Release Jewish Settlers as per Ceasefire Deal

Israel hopes to release Jewish settlers held under administrative detention in the West Bank. This decision aligns with a potential deal to release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners in exchange for hostages in Gaza. Israeli authorities rarely use administrative detention, which involves holding individuals without trial, on settlers.

Violence by extremist settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank happens frequently. Israel has occupied the West Bank since 1967. Over 500,000 Jewish settlers live in illegal settlements there, violating international law. In November, Defense Minister Katz ended the use of administrative detention for settlers. Far-right ministers Itamar Ben Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich welcomed the decision.

Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi called the Gaza ceasefire Israel’s “surrender.” He congratulated Hamas on its “victory” and reaffirmed Iran’s support. In a call with Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya, Araghchi promised continued financial and military assistance. Hamas credited Iran for helping achieve the truce.

French President Emmanuel Macron said two French-Israelis, Ofer Kalderon and Ohad Yahalomi, are among 33 hostages set to be released. Israel’s security cabinet is reviewing the six-week ceasefire deal. Hostages could be freed as early as Sunday, pending government approval.

Aid workers remain uncertain about access under the ceasefire. The deal promises up to 600 aid trucks daily into Gaza. Preparations for displaced civilians continue, but challenges like unexploded ordnance and damaged buildings persist.

Israeli strikes in Gaza have killed over 100 people in 48 hours, including 27 children. The death toll includes family members and emergency responders, despite the ceasefire announcement. (CNN)
