Israeli airstrikes hit Beirut’s southern suburbs overnight and early Sunday. Witnesses described it as the heaviest attack since Israel escalated its campaign against Hezbollah. Powerful blasts and flashes lit up the sky for nearly 30 minutes.
Smoke and haze covered the city on Sunday morning. Rubble filled the streets in the southern suburbs. Hanan Abdullah, a resident of Burj al-Barajneh, said the strikes were very violent. She thought it was an earthquake because of the shaking buildings.
Videos on social media showed damage to the highway near Beirut airport. Israel confirmed it targeted Hezbollah’s weapons storage and infrastructure in Beirut. Lebanese authorities have not yet commented on the damage.
This bombing comes just before the anniversary of the October 7 attack by Hamas on southern Israel. That attack left over 1,200 people dead and more than 250 held hostage.
