Israel launched airstrikes on military targets in Iran early Saturday in response to a recent Iranian attack. The strikes targeted significant military sites but avoided key oil and nuclear facilities, following global calls for caution. Ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon heighten tensions and raise fears of further escalation.
The Israeli military conducted multiple waves of airstrikes before dawn, focusing on missile production sites and defense installations. Israel warned Iran against any retaliation. Although Iran’s air defenses intercepted some strikes, two soldiers died, and some areas sustained limited damage. The semi-official Tasnim news agency warned of a “proportional reaction” to Israel’s actions. Iran’s Foreign Ministry asserted its right to defend itself while committing to regional stability.
In Tehran, officials met to evaluate their response. They reported minimal damage to Revolutionary Guard bases. Iranian media broadcast footage of air defenses intercepting projectiles over Tehran. Operations at Mehrabad Airport experienced only minor disruptions.
Israel announced no changes to public safety measures, indicating it does not expect an immediate response from Iran. The United States, Israel’s main ally, urged caution and advised against strikes on sensitive nuclear and oil sites. President Joe Biden confirmed that Washington would support Israel if necessary but emphasized the importance of restraint. Iranian officials reiterated their warnings about Israeli actions but refrained from promising immediate retaliation.
The international community calls for moderation. All eyes focus on Tehran to see how it will respond to the strikes as tensions in the Middle East remain high. (Reuters, CNN)
