Hurricane Helene caused major destruction in Asheville, NC. Thousands lost power, and heavy flooding damaged the area. The North Carolina National Guard (NCNG) deployed over 500 soldiers and airmen. They used more than 200 vehicles and aircraft for rescue operations. The NCNG saved 119 people and 11 pets in 16 missions.
In Bumcombe County, they rescued 41 people. Aid from nearby states also helped with food, water, and medical supplies. Local authorities confirmed the safety of the Bee Tree Dam after concerns about its stability.
Governor Roy Cooper thanked first responders for their efforts. Former President Trump also offered prayers for those affected. Community members, including a salon owner, shared stories of devastation. Many set up fundraisers to rebuild.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services declared a public health emergency. President Biden had earlier issued emergency declarations for multiple states. The federal government is working with local authorities to assess needs and provide support.
Music stars Luke Combs and Chase Rice expressed their support for relief efforts. Both promised to help the Carolinas recover from the disaster. (Newyork Times)
