How Trump’s Return Impacts TikTok

How Trump's Return Impacts TikTok

On Sunday, TikTok resumed operations after a 14-hour shutdown. The platform thanked Trump for restoring access. Trump promised to delay enforcing a law requiring ByteDance to sell TikTok or face a ban. He announced plans to issue an executive order extending the timeline. This would allow time for negotiations to address national security concerns.

TikTok expressed gratitude in a statement. “We thank President Trump for providing clarity and assurance,” the company said. It also promised to work on a long-term solution.

The app’s return delighted its 170 million U.S. users. Influencer Shay Sullivan, with over a million followers, celebrated the news. She described the shutdown as emotional but felt relieved when the app returned.

Despite this, TikTok’s future remains uncertain. The law demands ByteDance sell the app to a U.S.-based or allied buyer. Trump proposed a 50-50 partnership with an American company. However, this may not satisfy Congress, which wants stricter measures.

TikTok’s temporary shutdown pressured Trump to act quickly. The app relies on tech partners like Oracle, Apple, and Google. These companies faced penalties for supporting TikTok under the new law. Trump’s decision provided temporary relief, but lawmakers insist ByteDance must fully divest.

Potential buyers, including groups led by Frank McCourt and Kevin O’Leary, have shown interest. However, ByteDance refuses to sell TikTok’s valuable algorithm. This poses a major challenge to any deal.

Until a sale is finalized, TikTok’s future in the U.S. remains unclear.
