Hepatitis A Takes Lives of Three Children in Uasin Gishu

HEPATITS A-swelling and inflammation of the liver.
Uasin Gishu County, Kenya

Three children have tragically succumbed to Hepatitis A in the past three months. This is according to Abraham Serem, the county Health executive. The region, particularly Ziwa in Soy sub-county, has seen a surge in cases, with ten more detected recently.

The affected children are all under the age of 13. Initially treated at Ziwa Hospital, they were later referred to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) Eldoret for specialized care.

Rising Concerns

Serem highlighted a significant uptick in Hepatitis A cases over the last month. In response, the county has ordered testing kits and is collaborating with the Ministry of Health and MTRH. Doing this to ensure rapid detection and management of the disease.

“The situation is on the watch, and we are taking swift action to identify and address new cases.” Serem says during Governor Jonathan Bii’s visit to Uasin Gishu County Hospital in Eldoret to review public health service delivery.

Preventive Measures

With heavy rains increasing the risk of waterborne diseases, Governor Bii reassured residents that public health officers are actively monitoring the situation across all areas. He emphasized that the spread of Hepatitis A is under control, thanks to preventive measures implemented by the county’s paramedical staff.

“There is no cause for alarm. Our medical teams have taken essential steps to contain the disease in affected areas and prevent further spread,” Governor Bii affirmed.

Community Outreach

The administration has launched sensitization programs led by community health workers and promoters to educate the public about the dangers of Hepatitis A. Additionally, Governor Bii committed to addressing the career stagnation of health workers, some of whom have been in the same job group for over two decades.
