Donald Trump has agreed to a debate with Kamala Harris on September 4. He announced this on Truth Social Friday night.
“Rules will be like my debate with Sleepy Joe, but with a full arena audience,” Trump said. He referred to President Joe Biden, who recently withdrew from the reelection race. Initially, Trump’s post included a proposal for a “major” town hall if Harris declined. This proposal was briefly removed before being reposted without the town hall suggestion.
Last month, Harris expressed readiness for a September 17 debate. After Biden withdrew on July 21 and endorsed Harris, Trump initially refused to debate her, saying she wasn’t the official candidate. Trump also mentioned that former President Obama had not yet endorsed Harris. Obama endorsed her the next day. On Friday, Kamala secured the delegate votes needed for the Democratic nomination.
Meanwhile, Harris’ campaign added three senior advisers, including top strategists from Obama’s campaigns. David Plouffe, who managed Obama’s 2008 campaign, joined as a senior adviser. Stephanie Cutter, a communications veteran, will advise on strategy messaging. Cutter’s firm will also produce the Democratic National Convention in August. Mitch Stewart, who worked on both Obama campaigns, will advise on battleground states. David Binder, Obama’s public opinion research leader, will head opinion research for Harris’ campaign.
All new advisers will report to campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon. Dillon managed Biden’s 2020 campaign and built his 2024 strategy. Mike Donilon, a longtime Biden adviser, will return to the White House for Biden’s final six months.
Trump is the Republican nominee for the November 5 US presidential election. Kamala has secured the Democratic nomination with the required delegate votes.
