The dramatic change to the Democratic ticket, with Harris replacing Biden as the party’s nominee, has given way to a slow-motion series of tributes to Biden. Their joint appearance on Thursday in Maryland, where Biden arrived to a hero’s welcomed as the prelude to the big finale on Monday.
The event will mark the end of a long political career for Biden, who attended his first Democratic National Convention as a 29-year-old Senate candidate in 1972. At the time, he was vying for the nation’s youngest senator. He takes the stage Monday as the country’s oldest sitting president.
What is expected of the Convention?
While there were preliminary negotiations about whether Biden would attend Harris’ acceptance speech on Thursday, they did not progress. He is not anticipated to stay in Chicago past Monday. This is due to the convention preparing to officially elevate Harris as the Democratic standard bearer.
Biden has watched with genuine delight as the party rallies around Harris, according to people familiar with his thinking. Further more, he expressed relief that a lengthy battle for the nomination averted. Thus came after he quickly endorsed her following his decision to withdraw.
Harris, for her part, has made it a point to publicly praise Biden. “I could speak all afternoon about the person that I’m standing on this stage with our extraordinary president, Joe Biden,” she remarked on Thursday.
