Haiti’s interim Prime Minister, Garry Conille, has been fired by the transitional council. The decree names Alix Didier Fils-Aime as his replacement. Fils-Aime, a businessman, had previously considered the role.
The transitional council appointed Conille, a former UN official, in May 2024 to address Haiti’s gang violence crisis. However, his time in office saw increasing political infighting and instability. Tensions between Conille and Leslie Voltaire, council leader, escalated over a cabinet reshuffle and the removal of council members involved in a bribery scandal. The council, created in April 2024, has struggled with internal divisions, hindering its ability to address Haiti’s challenges effectively.
Gang violence has surged, worsening the country’s crisis. Despite Conille’s efforts, his dismissal shows the ongoing difficulty of navigating Haiti’s political landscape. Fils-Aime now faces the task of guiding Haiti toward elections, amid violence and economic hardship.
Haiti also struggles with hunger, kidnappings, and civil unrest. As the country struggles to restore democratic order, Conille’s firing adds more uncertainty to Haiti’s future.
