Government Resumes Old Student Funding Model

Government Resumes Old Student Funding Model
The Kenyan government reverted to the old funding model to provide students with upkeep money despite a court order. This decision followed a month of students going without government support.
Joseph King’ori Ndegwa, the lending manager at Helb, confirmed that by morning, Sh3.7 billion had been deposited into students’ accounts. He expected the full payment by the end of the dayHe called it a temporary measure to ease the students’ suffering. However, universities have not received their payments.
The government’s decision came as it awaits the outcome of an appeal against a court ruling. The court declared the new funding model unlawful. Ndegwa also explained that the disbursed money was based on the old funding model, but it seemed to be the balance Helb should have given under the quashed model.

This raises concerns about defying the court ruling. Outside Helb’s headquarters, students caused traffic disruptions. They demanded the release of their funds. Ndegwa explained that the delay was due to the court case and the ruling that halted the new funding model.
