Gachagua’s Discontent
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has been visibly distressed by intense political pressure, often appearing tormented. His frustration is evident in his responses to former allies who have become adversaries.
Recently, the political climate has worsened, with threats of impeachment and accusations of treason from some Mt Kenya MPs. In response, Gachagua has promoted slogans such as “one man, one shilling, one vote” and advocated for resource allocation based on population. He also supports the “I am a villager” campaign and calls for unity within Mt Kenya.
Controversy
Critics view these efforts as attempts to regain lost public support. Interior CS nominee Kithure Kindiki and others have labeled his slogans as divisive. Sacked Public Service CS Moses Kuria has called him a “cry baby,” while Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has accused him of stifling independent thought.
Gachagua has struggled to clearly articulate his grievances. Political analyst Herman Manyora suggests he is caught between loyalty to President William Ruto and a desire to rebel.
After two months of turmoil, Gachagua has identified 15 issues he wants addressed. Despite his frustrations, he has decided not to leave the government. In a recent interview, he expressed ongoing issues with President Ruto and criticized the President’s inner circle for causing problems.
His allies, including Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga and several MPs, have hinted at serious problems. In May, Gachagua withdrew from public life, later explaining that he was fasting and praying.
MP Jane Kihara highlighted contentious issues from Gachagua’s interview. He claimed that junior DCI officers were targeting his office and loyalists. Gachagua also reported an assassination attempt on a spy and alleged that DCI officers were hunting his aides and seizing phones.
He believes President Ruto is aware of his struggles but has been slow to act. Gachagua feels that his boss set him up against the country and abandoned him after he criticized former President Uhuru Kenyatta. He worries about the future of the UDA party, especially after someone ousted former Secretary-General Cleophas Malala without consulting him.. Additionally, Gachagua has complained about delays in farm produce returns and alleged state-sponsored land grabbing.
