Kenya’s Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua recently attended court proceedings, even after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) summoned him regarding alleged attempts on his life. The DCI sought to question him after he reported threats against him.
Gachagua had just been discharged from the hospital on Sunday after treatment for an undisclosed condition. Despite his recent hospitalization, he prioritized the court proceedings related to corruption charges over the DCI summons.
His legal team confirmed he would cooperate with the DCI later but emphasized that the court case took precedence. Allegations of threats against Gachagua have raised public concern, with some linking them to the political tensions surrounding his impeachment.
A three-judge panel will hear a motion in court. This motion challenges stay orders that prevent Prof. Kithure Kindiki, Gachagua’s nominated successor, from assuming office.
Gachagua entered the courtroom with his legal team, including Senior Counsel Paul Muite. Other prominent lawyers on his defense team are Elisha Ongoya, Ndegwa Njiru, Vitor Swanya, Faith Waigwa, George Wandati, Tom Macharia, and Duntan Omari. His son, Keith Ikinu, also attended and sat next to him. Gachagua is the first Deputy President to face impeachment under the Constitution of Kenya 2010.
