MPs are gearing up efforts to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. They have started signing the motion for his removal. National Assembly Deputy Majority Leader Owen Baya confirmed this development saying he noted that they have built a strong case. Although Baya did not share details, he stated that the motion would be tabled soon. MPs supporting this move believe that removing Gachagua will limit his influence.
Lawmakers from both sides back the effort, showing bipartisan support. Gachagua’s divisive remarks lie at the center of the accusations. His statements on government shareholding and his criticism of the National Intelligence Service have drawn attention.
To proceed, the motion requires support from 117 MPs. If passed, Gachagua will face disqualification from holding public office. This outcome would carry serious political consequences. Legal experts also warn that impeachment would prevent him from running for any office, including the presidency. The process is likely to encounter court challenges.
Gachagua has several options. He can choose to resign, mount a political defense, or negotiate with President Ruto. If he fails to resolve the issue, he risks ending his political career. Although impeachment is challenging, it could significantly alter the political landscape for both Gachagua and Ruto.
