Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua impeachment motion has signaled the collapse of his alliance with President William Ruto. Months of internal disputes led to this, with Gachagua accusing Ruto of allowing his close allies to harass him.
Backed by 291 National Assembly members, the motion accuses Gachagua of constitutional violations and inflammatory remarks. He also faces allegations of corruption and money laundering, with claims that he acquired property through dubious means, involving his family in these transactions.
Critics argue that Gachagua’s comments have deepened ethnic divisions and endangered national unity. His harsh stance has alienated many Central Kenya MPs, who now support the impeachment. They accuse him of forcing them into submission and stifling their political freedom.
In response, Gachagua claims that Ruto approved the impeachment. He further blames the President for not resolving the tensions that arose after his selection as running mate. Initially, many in Ruto’s camp had preferred Interior CS Kithure Kindiki for the position.
Gachagua’s political future is uncertain as he faces the possibility of removal. If the Senate upholds the impeachment, he could be barred from public office for ten years. To avoid this, his legal team has advised him to resign before the Senate vote.
This impeachment sets a significant precedent and could reshape Gachagua’s political path. Despite the current turmoil, his exit might solidify his leadership in the Mount Kenya region.
