Former President of Kenya Uhuru Kenyatta to lead a 60 member team for AU duty in South Africa

The former President of Kenya Uhuru Kenyatta is expect to lead a team of 60 AU members. The team include ambassadors, election management officials, civil society representatives, human rights specialists gender and media experts. Also youth organization representatives from across Africa. These delegates are from 24 countries including Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa’s neighboring countries Zimbabwe and Namibia. Uhuru Kenyatta appointed by the African Union Commission (AUC) to lead the African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) for South Africa’s upcoming general elections on May 29 2024.

The role of the team will be to offer impartial reporting or assessment of the quality of the poll. Hence encompassing the extent to which the election conduct aligns with regional, continental, and international standards for democratic elections. According to a report done by the South African Broadcasting Corporation, the observers will also provide recommendations. For enhancing future elections, grounded in their findings. This effort underscores the AU’s solidarity and backing for South Africa’s electoral and democratization endeavours, aimed at fostering democratic, credible, and peaceful elections conducive to good governance, peace, and stability in the country.

Uhuru has highlighted the joint efforts of African nations to support South Africa during this pivotal moment. Furthermore he mention the role of diplomatic channels in fostering a secure environment for voters and ensuring the integrity of the electoral outcomes.

He also emphasized the crucial importance of regional cooperation and solidarity ahead of Wednesday’s National and Provincial Elections.

On his arrival in South Africa as leader of the AUEOM, Uhuru has participated in a significant pre-election debriefing and peer-exchange session with the heads of International Electoral Observation Missions (IEOMs). He met with the National Operational and Intelligent Structure (NATJOINS). Which is led  South African Police Service Major General Mashadi Selepe and representatives from the South African Council of Churches.

He also met with Media Monitoring Africa, South Africa’s Minister of Home Affairs, Aaron Motsoaledi. And the Commissioners of the Electoral Commission of South Africa, led by Chairman Mosotho Moepya.
