Firefighters from six counties in Kenya’s Upper Eastern region received advanced training to improve their response to fires. Teams from Embu, Meru, Nyeri, Wajir, and Marsabit attended the three-day training in Tharaka-Nithi County. UK experts led the sessions. The training followed a 2019 partnership between Tharaka-Nithi and Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Services. The goal is to provide better training and equipment.
Ryan Phillips, the UK project leader, stressed the importance of this collaboration. He said it focuses on disaster prevention and emergency response. Initially, only Tharaka-Nithi and Meru participated, but more counties have joined. The program aims to expand further.
Alex Mugambi, Tharaka-Nithi’s Fire and Rescue Services Manager, said the training has improved emergency readiness. It has enhanced rescue operations in various disasters.
UK paramedic Lee Attwood explained that local firefighters learned to work closely with paramedics. They also gained skills in managing critical patients. Community safety officer Kayleigh Jean urged schools to install smoke alarms and conduct fire drills to boost safety.
