Earthquake in Tibet Kills 120, Shakes Nepal, Bhutan, and India
At least 120 people died and 130 were injured after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Tibet’s Tingri County on Tuesday. The tremor occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers and caused widespread damage. It was felt in Nepal, Bhutan, and India. The US Geological Service measured the quake at 7.1 in magnitude.

The epicenter was 80 kilometers from Mount Everest, a seismically active region. Tingri experienced strong tremors that damaged over 1,000 homes. Aftershocks reached magnitudes of up to 4.4.

President Xi Jinping ordered urgent search and rescue operations. Authorities delivered 22,000 relief items, including tents, coats, and quilts. Tingri and nearby villages, at elevations of 4,000–5,000 meters, reported heavy shaking.

In Nepal, tremors shook seven hill districts near the Tibet border. Officials reported no casualties or significant damage. Police and local authorities also began assessing remote areas only accessible by foot. In Kathmandu, 400 kilometers from the epicenter, residents fled their homes. One person injured themselves jumping from a building.

The quake also affected Bhutan’s capital Thimphu and also India’s Bihar state. Officials in both areas reported no major damage. The disaster recalls the devastating 2015 Nepal earthquake that killed 9,000 people. That quake triggered an avalanche at Mount Everest base camp.

Rescue efforts are ongoing as aftershocks continue to shake the region. Residents remain alert and fearful of further tremors
