The EACC handed over Sh5.1 billion worth of assets to the government, and President William Ruto accepted them. Two politicians, two former judiciary officials, a retired military officer, and a private businessman were involved in these cases. Public land made up Sh4.63 billion of the recovered assets.
For example, former Baringo Senator Gideon Moi and ex-Cabinet Minister Nicholas Biwott took 3.25 acres of land in Eldoret. The land, worth Sh1.2 billion, originally belonged to the National Police Service. Between 1995 and 1998, they transferred it to their company, Lima Ltd. The EACC filed a case in 2004, and the court ruled in its favor in 2019. The recovery process concluded in May 2024.
Similarly, former magistrate Charles Oyoo Kanyangi grabbed 1.88 acres of land intended for court expansion in Kisumu. In 1994, with help from then Commissioner of Lands Wilson Gachanja, Kanyangi acquired the land. He later sold it to two brothers. The EACC recovered the land in 2019 after years of legal battles.
In another case, lawyer Paul Kiptenai Kimisoy arap Birech seized one acre of land in Eldoret. Initially reserved for the Uasin Gishu County Referral Hospital, the land changed hands several times before Birech’s company took control.
Businessman Wilson Kipkoti, along with an associate, also grabbed 0.96 acres in Upper Hill, Nairobi. This land, worth Sh700 million, was meant for the Kenya School of Law. The EACC ultimately returned the land to the government.
