DRC Urges Clubs to Drop “Visit Rwanda” Deal

DRC Urges Clubs to Drop "Visit Rwanda" Deal

On Saturday, the DRC Health Ministry reported nearly 800 bodies in hospital morgues in Goma. Rwanda-backed M23 rebels are advancing to capture the city. Goma holds vast gold, coltan, and tin deposits. The violence has displaced hundreds of thousands.

The United Nations has documented severe human rights abuses. These include summary executions, attacks on displacement camps, gang rape, and other forms of sexual violence.

DRC Foreign Minister Therese Kayikwamba Wagner urged Arsenal, Bayern Munich, and Paris St Germain to cut ties with “Visit Rwanda.” She called the sponsorship deals “bloodstained” as the crisis deepens.

This week, Wagner also wrote to the three clubs, questioning the ethics of their partnerships. She cited a UN report stating 4,000 Rwandan troops are in DRC.

Wagner also wrote that thousands remain trapped in Goma while Food, water, and security are scarce. Many lives have been lost. Rape, murder, and looting are widespread. Your sponsor is directly responsible. If not for moral reasons, end the deal for the victims of Rwandan aggression.”

Rwanda denies involvement, claiming it is defending itself from Congolese forces allied with Hutu-led militias. DRC accuses Rwanda of using M23 to exploit its minerals.
