Republican former Vice President Dick Cheney supports Kamala Harris over Donald Trump in the November 5 elections. His daughter, Liz Cheney, expressed similar views earlier. Trump and Harris are in a tight race, with a debate scheduled for next week. Several Republicans, unhappy with Trump’s leadership, have also endorsed Harris. This group includes former staffers from the George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush administrations.
Cheney served as vice president under George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009. Critics blame him for his role in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, which led to significant civilian casualties. The Iraq war, based on false claims that Baghdad had weapons of mass destruction, has drawn particular scrutiny.
Liz Cheney, a former congresswoman, has also criticized Trump, especially after the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. Dick Cheney called Trump the greatest threat to the republic in American history. He urged Americans to put country over party and declared his vote for Kamala Harris. The Harris campaign welcomed the Cheneys’ support, highlighting a growing number of Republicans prioritizing the country over party loyalty.
Trump dismissed the Cheneys as “irrelevant RINOs” (Republicans In Name Only) on social media.
Trump’s Legal Troubles and Election Delays
In a separate case, a New York judge delayed Trump’s sentencing in a hush money case until after the election. The sentencing, initially set for September 18, is now scheduled for November 26. This aims to avoid any appearance of political bias. Trump, convicted on 34 felony counts related to a $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels, denies the encounter and plans to appeal after sentencing.
The judge emphasized the court’s impartiality and set a new decision date for November 12. The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office is prepared for sentencing on the new date. This case remains under close scrutiny as it involves Trump’s personal conduct, separate from his other legal challenges.
