Detectives Investigate Officers After Gigiri Prisoners Escape

Investigators are checking call records and transactions of officers on duty during the Gigiri jailbreak. Thirteen detainees, including a suspected serial killer, escaped. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is also analyzing the officers’ mobile phones. Authorities suspect this was an inside job. Detectives believe communication data and transactions will reveal key details.

The DCI’s Cyber Crime Unit is reviewing nearby CCTV footage. “We are also pursuing suspects still at large,” a police source confirmed. The five officers involved include Corporal Ronald Babo and Constables Evans Kipkirui, Mollent Achieng, and Zachary Nyabuto. Report officer Geral Mutuku is also under investigation.

The morning shift officers discovered the Eritrean detainees were missing. Mr. Jumaisi reportedly walked out unnoticed. The officers discussed the escape over tea in the canteen.

The 12 Eritreans being pursued also are Daniel Reso, Yosef Sarati, and Yonathan Reflon. Others include Adam Tetesalam, Felmon Sere, Nenak Menan, and Felmon Bokr. The rest are Daniel Bokbenez, Felmbas Seleba, Naham Nehomora, Telcon Samuel, and Filnan Kohene.

Acting Inspector-General of Police Gilbert Masengeli confirmed the escape was an inside job. “I have interdicted eight officers on duty that night,” he announced. Initial detectives investigations indicated officer involvement. Officer Evans Kipkirui first reported the escape. He claimed the detainees cut a wire mesh and scaled a wall. Local boda boda operators noticed no unusual activity that night.

Business at the station appeared normal during a visit. The station is in a secure area near the U.S. Embassy. The jailbreak was documented under two Occurrence Book numbers: 05/20/08/2024 and 7/20/08/2024. The station is now a crime scene. Top officers, including Mr. Masengeli and DCI boss Mohamed Amin, are overseeing the investigation.
