Dame Maggie Smith, best known for her roles in Downton Abbey and Harry Potter, has died at 89. Her sons, Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens, announced her peaceful passing on September 27, 2024. Family and friends were by her side. They thanked the staff at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their exceptional care. Smith leaves behind two sons and five grandchildren.
Born in Ilford, England, in 1934, Dame Smith enjoyed a career that spanned over 60 years. She launched her acting journey in 1952 with Twelfth Night at the Oxford Playhouse. In 1956, she debuted on Broadway in New Faces of ’56. That same year, she starred in her first film, Child in the House.
Smith won two Oscars, four Golden Globes, four Emmys, and a Tony Award. Audiences loved her as Violet Crawley in Downton Abbey. She also captured a new generation of fans as Professor McGonagall in Harry Potter.
Although famous, Smith kept her personal life private. She married Beverley Cross and remained with him until his death in 1998. She is survived by her two sons and five grandchildren. Courtesy of Fox News.
