Body by Design, a cosmetic surgery clinic, is shut down by the government after a botched procedure led to a patient’s death.
Dr. Kariuki, CEO of the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC), confirmed this decision. He said the clinic failed to meet essential standards. “We closed the facility until they comply with specific requirements.” Dr. Kariuki explained, calling the move necessary for public safety as investigations proceed. Operating as Omnicare Medical Ltd, the clinic now faces scrutiny after Lucy Nganga, a patient, died following surgery there. The KMPDC began an investigation to verify if the clinic adhered to professional standards in Nganga’s treatment. “We sent a team for a fact-finding mission,” Health Ministry Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni stated, adding that they would take legal action for any malpractice.
Lucy Nganga left the clinic on October 22 after surgery but died four days later. A friend shared on social media that Nganga’s condition worsened, requiring intensive care before her death. Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko also paid tribute, recalling her support during his Mombasa governor campaign.
Omnicare Medical Ltd has asked the High Court to reverse the closure. Representing the clinic, lawyer Danstan Omari urged the court to intervene, arguing that the closure violates the clinic’s right to operate and serve clients.
Court documents show that medical staff initially cleared Nganga for discharge on October 17, but she chose to stay an extra day. After reporting chest pains, she left the clinic on October 22.
