Chopper Carrying Malawi’s Vice President Saulos Chilima missing

The chopper carrying Malawi’s Vice President, Dr. Saulos Chilima, has gone missing. The Malawi Defense Force Aircraft carrying Chilima and others left the capital of Lilongwe at 9:17 a.m. local time (3.17 a.m. ET), the presidential office and cabinet said in a statement.

The aircraft,  lost contact with air traffic control earlier today. It was en route to a scheduled event in the northern region of the country.Authorities are currently conducting an extensive search and rescue operation. The last known position of the helicopter is reported near a mountainous area, which is now the primary focus of the search efforts.

President Lazarus Chakwera briefs on the situation.

The plane carrying the Malawi vice president Saulos Chilima had scheduled to land at the Mzuzu International Airport. About 380 km (240 miles) to the north of Lilongwe, but did not arrive and is no longer detectable through radar, according to authorities.

“As such, the commander of the Malawi Defense Force, General Valentino Phiri, has since informed His Excellency Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera of the incident.  The president has cancel his scheduled departure for the Bahamas. And ordered all regional and national agencies to conduct an immediate search. Hence to rescue operation to locate the whereabouts of the aircraft,”

He has also called for calm as rescue teams work tirelessly to locate the Vice President. And any other passengers aboard the chopper.

This incident has sparked widespread concern across the nation.
