Children among those killed after Israel bombs in Gaza. Eighty percent of those killed and injured in Sunday’s strikes on the Hassan Salama and al-Nasr schools were youngsters, according to the Palestinian Civil Defense in Gaza.
Al Jazeera’s Hani Mahmoud reported from Deir el-Balah that the schools, which the displaced Palestinians had been using as shelter, had suffered significant damage.
“We have witnessed this same situation in the last few days. As of right now, we can say with certainty that attacks on evacuation centers are concentrated. The Israeli military is not providing any prior notice to individuals inside these evacuation centers,” according to Mahmoud.
The correspondent observed that schools make up the majority of the structures that the displaced in Gaza utilize as shelters. This is because they are now the only large areas that can accommodate a sizable number of people.
According to Mahmoud, “This is happening unpredictably. As a result, causing severe casualties and increasing the trauma of a population already displaced. Another area across the northern part of the Gaza Strip in some cases up to five, six, or seven times.”
The Israeli army bombed a school on Saturday preceded by the attacks on Sunday. After the attacks on Sunday, Israeli airstrikes on the Hamama school in Gaza City’s Sheikh Radwan neighborhood—which served as a shelter for displaced Palestinians—killed at least fifteen people. The Israeli military asserted that the “schools were used by Hamas’s Al Furqan Battalion. Thus as a hiding place for its terrorist operatives. And more so as command centers used to plan and execute attacks” without offering any supporting documentation. Courtesy of Reuters.
