Cheptegei, Ugandan Runner, Passes Away After Being Set on Fire

Rebecca Cheptegei, a Ugandan Olympic marathon runner, has died after her boyfriend set her on fire. Hospital officials confirmed her death on Thursday. The 33-year-old athlete suffered severe burns to over 75% of her body during the attack in Kenya on Sunday. She had competed in the Paris Olympics, finishing 44th.

This incident marks the third time since October 2021 that a female athlete has been killed in Kenya. Donald Rukare, president of the Uganda Olympics Committee, condemned the violence in a statement on X. He called the attack a “cowardly and senseless act” and emphasized the loss of a talented athlete. He offered condolences, stating, “May her gentle soul rest in peace and we strongly condemn violence against women.”

Cheptegei received treatment at a hospital in Eldoret, Kenya, after the attack. Despite the medical efforts, her injuries proved too severe. The news has shocked communities in both Kenya and Uganda and highlights the ongoing issue of violence against women. The incident has sparked calls for greater awareness and action to prevent such violence.

Cheptegei’s death represents a significant loss to the athletic world and to those who knew her. Her passing underscores the urgent need to address and prevent domestic violence. The global athletic community, along with her fans and supporters, mourns the loss of a dedicated and accomplished athlete whose life ended tragically.
