President Joe Biden called Kamala Harris the party’s best hope to defend democracy. He urged support for Harris against Donald Trump. This speech marked his farewell after over 50 years of service.
Biden received a warm welcome and a standing ovation. He waved to the crowd holding signs saying, “We love Biden.” Biden asked, “Are you ready to vote for freedom, democracy, and America?”
He also encouraged everyone to support Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. Biden pledged to be their “best volunteer” and criticized Trump throughout his speech. The Chicago convention kicked off a four-day event focused on Harris.
Endorsement of Harris and Walz
Biden chose to endorse Harris instead of seeking re-election. Party leaders, concerned about his age, pressured Biden to step aside. “I love the job, but I love my country more,” Biden said.
The crowd chanted, “We love Joe,” in response. As Vice President under Barack Obama, Biden urged Democrats to unite behind Harris. If elected, Harris would be the first woman, Black, and South Asian president.
Her campaign has gained momentum, breaking fundraising records. Harris has also boosted polls in key battleground states. She joined Biden onstage after his speech, sharing an emotional moment.
Biden had planned to accept the nomination for another term. Instead, he will head to California for a vacation. Biden withdrew from the race after a poor debate performance against Trump.
In his speech, Biden’s highlighted his accomplishments. He mentioned economic growth and strengthened international alliances. Biden urged voters to support Harris and condemned Trump’s foreign policy failures.
He acknowledged the pro-Palestinian protesters outside the convention. Biden emphasized his efforts to broker a ceasefire. “Those protesters out in the street also have a point,” Biden said.
Earlier, thousands protested nearby against U.S. military support for Israel’s Gaza offensive. Some protesters breached security near the convention center. The police arrested several protesters.
Harris, 59, made a surprise appearance at the event. She vowed to defeat Trump, saying, “When we fight, we win!” Harris will officially accept the nomination on Thursday.
Clinton’s Support for Harris
Hillary Clinton, the 2016 Democratic candidate, also appeared. She received a standing ovation and spoke about America’s progress. Clinton also praised Biden for restoring dignity and competency to the White House.
Clinton voiced her support for Harris, saying, “Kamala has the character, experience, and vision to lead us forward.” She added.
