President Biden visited Florida on Sunday . He was set to assess Hurricane Milton’s damage. The storm was the second to hit the state recently, worsening floods in several areas.
Hurricane Milton caused 17 deaths and added to the impact left by Hurricane Helene. Many regions still lack electricity and fuel. The Biden administration approved federal aid to support recovery efforts. Biden arrived in Tampa, toured the damaged areas, and reached St. Petersburg. He met with officials, first responders, and residents before speaking publicly. The state’s emergency center said more fuel distribution sites would open on Sunday.
Flooding continues in Tampa Bay and near Sanford as rivers rise, according to the National Weather Service. Experts link climate change to stronger hurricanes, raising concerns about Florida’s infrastructure. Despite the risks, many residents plan to rebuild.
Governor Ron DeSantis said he won’t stop people from rebuilding in risky areas. Hurricane Milton was less severe than expected, but insured losses could still be between $30 billion and $60 billion. (Reuters)
