Vice President Kamala Harris and Democratic Senate nominee Rep. Colin Allred are ramping up efforts to mobilize voters in Texas. This Friday, Harris will make her campaign debut with Beyoncé in Houston. They aim to energize supporters by focusing on key issues like abortion rights. Harris plans to contrast her views with those of former President Donald Trump.
In her speech, Harris will highlight the risks a second Trump term poses to women’s reproductive freedom. She will hold Trump accountable for strict abortion bans in Texas, especially after the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Harris will be joined by women who have experienced these restrictive laws firsthand.
Allred will also participate in the Houston event as he campaigns against incumbent Republican Sen. Ted Cruz. Additionally, Harris will sit down for an interview with podcaster Brene Brown to connect with voters through media.
In 2021, Texas banned abortions once fetal cardiac activity is detected, usually around six weeks. This often happens before many individuals realize they are pregnant. A trigger law prohibits nearly all abortions, except when the mother faces serious health risks. It also allows private citizens to file lawsuits against anyone who “aids or abets” an abortion.
Harris’ and Beyonce visit comes just weeks before the election. Her campaign hopes that emphasizing reproductive rights will motivate voters. This November, voters in at least 10 states will decide the future of abortion access in their areas. (CNN).
