On September 26, 2024, Beijing’s Vice Mayor Ma Jun led a delegation to meet Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja at City Hall. The delegation, focusing on health, science, technology, and education, sought to explore new areas of cooperation between Nairobi and Beijing.
Governor Sakaja praised the strong partnership between Nairobi and China, particularly their efforts to regenerate the Nairobi River. He recognized China’s leadership in the cleanup and restoration of the river, calling it a crucial step in improving Nairobi’s environment. “We have much to learn from China and value their partnership. They are leading the way in cleaning and regenerating the Nairobi River,” said Sakaja.
Sakaja also welcomed more collaborations with China, especially in technology and waste management. He highlighted plans to transform Nairobi’s daily garbage collection into electricity using advanced technology. “We are ready to work with partners who share our vision, and China is more than welcome to join us in this project,” he added.
Vice Mayor Ma Jun affirmed Beijing’s commitment to supporting Nairobi’s development agenda. He reiterated China’s interest in partnering with Nairobi in key areas like technology, education, science, and health.
