Amazon to invest more €10 billion in Germany.
Tech giant Amazon said it would invest a further 10 billion euros ($10.7 billion) in Germany.
The company said 8.8 billion euros would go towards expanding facilities. And also for its cloud-computing subsidiary Amazon Web Services near Frankfurt.
The remaining funds will go towards logistics, robotics and two new headquarters.
Amazon said it expects its workforce in Germany to grow from about 36,000 in 2023 to 40,000 full-time employees by the end of the year.
Scholz welcomed Amazon’s investment
Amazon said it has already invested more than 77 billion euros since 2010 in the country.
The new investment comes as Europe’s largest economy focuses on tech as it tries to emerge from a period of stagnation.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz said Amazon’s investment showed Germany remained an “attractive business location”.
“As a government, we are really working to strengthen our competitiveness,” he said.
Amazon announces investments in cloud, logistics, and R&D.
Today, we announced plans to invest €10 billion in Germany to drive innovation and support the expansion of our logistics network. And to also uplifting cloud infrastructure across the country. This year we will also create 4,000 new jobs in three new logistics centers. Are as follows; one in Horn-Bad Meinberg (North Rhine-Westphalia), due to open in late summer 2024; one in Erfurt (Thuringia). Furthermore, due to open in May 2024; and one in Großenkneten, due to open in August 2023. With these new jobs, we will have more than 40,000 full-time employees in Germany by the end of the year. This will impact across our entire company, in more than 100 German cities and towns. For all kinds of positions at all levels.
Brandenburg AWS Sovereign Cloud
AWS plans to invest €7.8 billion in the AWS European Sovereign Cloud.
AWS’ investment reflects its long-term commitment to meeting European digital sovereignty requirements.
Following last month’s announcement of a €7.8 billion investment in the AWS European Sovereign Cloud. Today’s announcement confirms our plans for a total investment of €17.8 billion in Germany. The AWS European Sovereign Cloud is a new independent cloud for Europe, whose first AWS Region is scheduled to launch in Brandenburg at the end of 2025.
