Adani Defends Bid to Oversee Jomo Kenyatta International Airport

Adani Airports Holdings Limited is defending its bid to manage Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). The company argues that the cases against it are premature since the project is still under review and has not been approved. Adani filed its response in the Nairobi High Court.

Adani became interested in JKIA after media reports highlighted its poor condition. The company submitted its proposal to the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) on March 1, 2024. It says the airport’s infrastructure urgently needs upgrades to reach global standards.

The proposal includes a project plan, financial details, and reasons for using a privately initiated proposal (PIP). The High Court temporarily blocked the plan and set a hearing for October 8. The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) and Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) also argue that JKIA is a vital national asset. They claim the deal lacks transparency and accountability.

Adani’s legal team also says the case belongs with the Public Private Partnership Petition Committee, not the High Court. The company’s plan includes a new terminal, improvements to existing facilities, and enhancements to runways and taxiways. Adani insists the project aligns with national infrastructure goals.

The company believes the plan will modernize JKIA and boost employment. It argues that public-private partnerships are essential to fund these upgrades. Other parties, including activist Tony Gachoka, Mount Kenya Jurists, and Issack Lango Guyo, have also filed cases against the proposal.
