A building collapses in Kenya On May 31, 2024 the quiet town of Gitaru in Kenya experienced a devastating incident. Besides, a three-story building collapsed amid ongoing road construction, resulting in a tragic loss of life and significant property damage. This catastrophe has drawn national attention, highlighting issues, related to construction safety and regulatory oversight.

  • Kikuyu Member of parliament HON. Kimani Ichung’wah authorized the revamp of the Gitaru interchange on 22nd April 2024 and said the goal is to ease the flow of traffic. Hence, noted the revamped interchange is poised to improve connectivity and enhance the overall travel experience for all.

The Incident 

  • The building, which is said to have vacated, came crashing down in the early afternoon. Witnesses reported hearing a loud rumble and a cloud of dust that enveloped the area. Emergency response teams were quickly dispatched to the scene, however, the chaotic aftermath posed significant challenges for rescue operations.

Causes, Casualities & Rescue efforts

  • Additionally, reports indicate that at least 1 person lost his life, with dozens more with injuries. The exact number of those trapped under the rubble remains uncertain as rescue efforts continue. The Red Cross, along with local emergency services, working tirelessly to extract survivors and provide medical assistance to the injured.
  • Preliminary investigations suggest that the collapse may have been triggered in vibrations and ground disturbances from the nearby road construction.
