The United States (US) plans to send about 100 troops to Israel to operate the Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-missile system. This deployment comes after Iran’s attacks on Israel in April and October. The goal is to help strengthen Israel’s air defenses against potential threats.
The US has previously stationed the THAAD system in Israel, using it in 2019 for a military exercise. However, the decision to send more troops now points to the increased tensions between Israel and Iran. The THAAD system’s primary role is to defend against ballistic missile threats, offering Israel crucial protection if Iran launches further attacks.
US officials have been advising Israel on its response to Iran’s recent strikes. They have recommended that Israel avoid targeting Iranian nuclear or oil sites to prevent further escalation. The US aims to manage the conflict carefully while ensuring Israel’s security.
Following the Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023, the US has significantly boosted its military presence in the Middle East. This increase includes deploying more warships and aircraft to the eastern Mediterranean, Red Sea, and Arabian Sea. Additional troops have also been stationed in Cyprus to support possible evacuation plans in the region.
These actions show the US commitment to reinforcing security and stability in the Middle East amid ongoing threats. By strengthening its military resources in the area, the US hopes to deter further aggression and support its allies, particularly Israel, during these heightened tensions with Iran. (CNN)
